María (born in Seville, Spain) started her musical studies aged seven, when she began learning piano and, later on, violin. She is part of the two theater groups at her home town, where she discovers her love for the stage.
She began her vocal studies at the Haute École de Musique de Genève (Geneva) with mezzo-soprano Jeanne Roth. She currently studies with the baritone Sebastian Geyer at the Zurich University of the Arts towards a Specialised Music Performance masters. María also studies with the soprano coloratura Luba Orgonasova as well as Lied repertoire with Christoph Berner and Hans Adolfsen. She has also attended masterclasses with international singers such as Brigitte Wohlfahrt, Martin Bruns, Caroline Stein, Luciana Serra, Luisa Castellani, Arthur Stefanowicz and Margreet Honig.
As a young singer, María covers a wide range of repertoire, having a special predilection for modern and contemporary repertoire such as Lachenmann, Berio, Aperghis and Ligeti among others. She is passionate about working with young composers and become an active part in the creative process, where she can explore all the possibilities of her instrument.
In this line and in order to expand her vocal horizons, Maria also attends Jazz and improvisation lessons during her Master studies in ZHdK with the german jazz singer Anne Czychowsky.
María has also received competition awards such as the audience prize at the Elvirissima Junge Stimmen Wettbewerb 2018 (Lucerne) and the honour prize at the Interpretation of Contemporary Music 2021 (Zurich).
María is currently a freelance member of the Zurich Opera House Choir. She also performs as a soloist in both international and national settings, performing a diverse range of music but always having a special taste for contemporary music. Exciting recent performances include a world premiere from Wolfgang Mitterer at the Salzburg Pocket Opera Festival and her debut as Monica in Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium.
